About the Mayor

| Mayor Butch Zwelling |
Butch Zwelling, Mayor of Zanesville, is a lifelong resident of Zanesville. He attended and graduated from Zanesville City Schools. Butch earned his juris doctorate from Ohio Northern University College of Law in 1962 after graduating from Muskingum College in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He practiced civil and criminal law for 22 years in Zanesville and other areas in Ohio. In 1983, he was elected Municipal Court Judge for the City of Zanesville, where he served for 16 years. In 1999, he was elected Judge of the Common Pleas Court of Muskingum County, Ohio, where he served for 6 years. On July 1, 2005, he became interim Mayor of the City of Zanesville.
Mayor Zwelling is active in the community. He is involved with organizations such as Sertoma, Muskingum County Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Ohio Supreme Court Committee on Dispute Resolution, the Police Athletic League, the Zanesville Quarterback Club, Downtown Clean-Up, Miracle on Main Street, Kidzville, the Zanesville Downtown Association, Zanesville/Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce, Goodwill Industries, the Senior Center and many more.
Zanesville City Schools have been a very important part of Mayor Zwelling's life, and continues to be so today as he is past president and current board member of the Zanesville Quarterback Club.
Major Responsibilities
Set and follow the City's annual budget; keep the laws; work together with all personalities; present the City's best image; calm all fears and concerns.
